When his first book got published, Rinella met with his editor over drinks.

Fortunately, the editor brought along the new publicity director, Catherine Finch.

Catherine found him impatient about their first impressions, whereas he could not keep his eyes off her.

Steven stated in a candid interview how Catherine paid attention to everything he said. On a different note, Rinella also stated how her cheekbones reminded him of Cate Blanchetta.

“Her cheekbones reminded me of Cate Blanchett, and she processed everything I said with the caution of a CIA interrogator. I’d never met anyone like her.”

After that, the duo continued their relationship professionally for a year.

Beginning Of A Relationship

While Steven and Catherine maintained their professional relationship on the surface, Rinella was falling for Catherine in a slow and spiral motion.

Rinella finally realized his feelings only when he started denying them in the first place.

For the most part, Steven believed how they both were very different from each other.

Their lifestyles contrasted, locations too. In other words, Catherine was everything that Rinella thought he did not want in his life or his life partner.

Not the bad stuff, but the simple ones, like Catherine living in New York while Rinella lived in Alaska.

After some time, when Steven thought he’d have enough and had to do something of his infatuation, he came up with a plan.

“She didn’t represent the things that I wanted from life. She lived in New York, for God’s sake—a place I’d reserved for punch lines and business trips. The only way to solve the problem, I figured, was to get her on my turf so we could see that we were incompatible, and then I could get over my crush.”

Rinella called her from Alaska via a satellite phone to ask her out, to which Finch agreed.

After agreeing to meet in Los Angeles, Steven and Catherine spent their time doing things he could never see himself doing in life.

“We spent four days cruising along the coast, doing things no self-respecting outdoorsman should ever do (excluding a trip to check out skeletons of mammoths). We poked around boutiques, gawked at mansions, and took a cruise on a tourist boat.”

But, instead of these new experiences throwing him off, Rinella felt like he had some of his life’s most amazing experiences with Catherine.

“Being with her allowed me to stop focusing exclusively on what I wanted—and forced me to stop being so damn selfish. It was a great feeling like someone had opened up the curtains and let the light in.”

However, more surprises were waiting as Rinella had no idea they would be moving in together on their second date.

Finch and Rinella went to midnight dinners on their second date, drank $20 drinks, and met Catherine’s parents.

This all happened after Rinella flew to New York and did not want to leave.

“Katie wasn’t asking me to change; she was just asking me to expand my definition of who I was. And the best part: If I’d do it for her, she’d do it for me, too.”

While Steven was caught off guard at first, Catherine’s [Katie] rule made sense to him.

When It Almost Ended

There was a time in the Rinella-Finch relationship when things got pretty ugly. Not like domestic violence is ugly. But the general one.

While the couple was out in a bar, they ended up arguing.

Too furious to sit in the bar, Steven stormed out of the bar and later went home [Steven and Catherine lived together by then]

However, when Rinella got home, Catherine simply said that if Rinella were to ever storm out like that, he would not be welcome anymore.

Catherine made sure that her tolerance for such rage-filled acts was very low, and she did not entertain it.

Although this made Rinella feel like a schoolchild, he understood the message behind it.

“Being with her would be tough but worth it because she was willing to keep the same promises she asked me to make.”
